Getting licensed in California — the practical details

The questions people actually ask about the California process, answered from official state sources.

What are the main California DMV license fees?

$46 for an original or renewal Class C, $37 to replace a lost card, and $9 for a behind-the-wheel retest.

What is the youngest age you can apply in California?

15½ with a driver education certificate and a parent's signature; 18 with neither.

How many questions are on the California permit test?

The DMV publishes an 80% standard, not a count. The long-published adult Class C figure is 36 questions with 30 correct to pass; the under-18 version is usually given as 46.

How many questions can you miss on the California test?

Six, on the commonly published 36-question adult Class C test — 30 correct answers are needed. The DMV itself publishes only the 80% standard.

Is there a time limit on the California knowledge test?

The DMV publishes no time limit, but a test cannot be started at an office after 4:30 p.m.

Can you take the California permit test online?

No. Original applicants test at a DMV office; only eligible Class C renewals may substitute the online eLearning course.

How do I schedule my California permit test?

Start the DL/ID application in a MyDMV account, upload your documents, then book the office visit it offers, or call 1-800-777-0133.

Is an eye exam required for a California license?

Yes: 20/40 with both eyes together, and 20/40 in one eye with at least 20/70 in the other, with or without lenses.

What happens if I fail the California written test?

Three attempts are covered by your application fee; after a third failure you must reapply. Minors wait seven days between attempts.

What languages is the California test offered in?

More than 40. The handbook is published in eight, and renewal eLearning runs in English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese.

Which California DMV services have no counter at all?

Renewals, replacement licenses and driver records — do those online, at a kiosk or by mail. Drive tests are the opposite: never given without an appointment.

How long is a California instruction permit valid?

Up to one year from the application date, and a minor must hold it at least six months before the drive test.
