Getting licensed in New York — the practical details

The questions people actually ask about the New York process, answered from official state sources.

What does a first New York permit and license cost?

It is banded by age on the day you apply. Class D or DJ: $80.00 at 16 to 16½, $76.75 at 16½ to 17, $92.50 at 17 to 17½, $89.25 at 17½ to 18, and $64.25 to $67.50 at 21 and older. Residents of the twelve MCTD counties add $1.00 per six months of validity, roughly $10, which turns the 17-year-old band into $102.50.

How old must you be for a New York learner permit?

Sixteen. There is no hardship or agricultural route below that. The knowledge test alone can be sat from 15 years and 11 months at a participating high school through the OKTA program, but the permit itself is not issued until the sixteenth birthday.

How many questions are on the New York permit test?

Twenty. Four of them are about road signs, and the other sixteen cover rules of the road, safe driving techniques, and the alcohol and drug laws. The material comes from Chapters 4 through 11 of the state driver manual; Chapters 1 through 3 are not tested.

How many can you miss on the New York written test?

Six overall — you need at least 14 right. But there is a second floor underneath: you must also get two of the four road-sign questions right. Miss three sign questions and you fail regardless of your total.

What is New York's road-sign sub-rule?

Four of the twenty questions are about road signs and you must answer at least two of those four correctly, on top of clearing the overall threshold. Both conditions apply at once, which is unique among the states covered here.

Can you take the New York permit test online?

Under-18 applicants can. After passing online you book an office appointment, but DMV needs three business days to review the results and your identity documents — arrive sooner and you retake the test in the office. Students at participating high schools can instead use OKTA from 15 years and 11 months.

How do you book a New York road test?

Online or by phone at 1-518-402-2100, using a ZIP code rather than your county — you may test anywhere in the state. You need a valid permit, an original MV-278 or an MV-285 on file, and at least one unused road test. Earliest slots usually fall three to five weeks out, up to ten in summer.

Is a vision test required for a New York license?

Yes, at first application and at every renewal. The standard is 20/40 on the Snellen scale in either or both eyes, with or without lenses. A provider enrolled in the DMV Online Vision Registry can file the result electronically, or an MV-619 can be completed by a physician, optometrist, ophthalmologist, optician or registered nurse.

What happens if you fail a New York road test?

Your learner permit stays valid to its own expiration date, but you must wait at least 14 days to try again. Your first two road tests are covered; further attempts are paid for through MyDMV. If the permit expires before your next attempt, you need a new permit first.

What languages is the New York permit test given in?

Twenty: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Urdu and Yiddish. The high-school OKTA version is English and Spanish only.

How long does a New York license last?

A first license is issued for a period not to exceed five years and expires on your month and day of birth. Renewals then run eight years, and you may renew up to one year early or as much as two years late before you must reapply and retake the permit and road tests.

How much identity proof does New York require?

Six points of proof of name, at least one item bearing your signature, plus proof of date of birth and one address document for a Standard credential or two for a REAL ID or Enhanced. A current New York photo license, permit or non-driver ID is worth all six on its own; a U.S. passport is four; a Social Security card is two; a utility bill is one.
