Getting licensed in Alabama — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Alabama process, answered from official state sources.
Which Alabama office issues a first license, and which one renews it?
ALEA examines and issues; the county renews. Section 32-6-4(a)(1) has you apply to ALEA for an initial license or non-driver ID, and to your county's judge of probate or license commissioner for a renewal. Out-of-state transfers and original STAR IDs are ALEA-only; duplicates, renewals and address changes can be done at the courthouse.
How much does an Alabama knowledge test cost, and how is it paid?
Five dollars per examination, by statute — § 32-6-21(a) says the fee "shall be required prior to each examination". The manual and ALEA's fee table both add that no checks are accepted; the reinstatement page lists money order, cashier's check, cash or credit card as the alternatives. The credential is a separate $36.25 for most license types.
In how many languages can you sit the Alabama written examination?
Eleven besides English, and the manual prints the whole list: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese. It directs you to a Driver License District Office for details on how each is administered. Separately, applicants unable to read and comprehend the written questions may be given an oral examination, which the manual says can run on the same automated equipment.
How many proofs of residence does Alabama want, and what counts?
Two, from a list of fifteen. Among them: a voter registration card, a mortgage contract, a current lease, a homestead property-tax receipt, last year's tax return, a vehicle registration, a utility bill under 90 days old, a court document, school enrollment paperwork, DD Form 214, a homeowners insurance policy, Social Security benefit statements, or military orders. If the document names your spouse or parent instead of you, bring a marriage or birth certificate to connect the two.
What happens to an Alabama license that has been expired more than three years?
You test again. ALEA's driver license information page says an applicant whose Alabama license has been expired for over three years must pass the required driver examination, and § 32-6-1(b) says failure to apply within the specified time requires taking and passing both a written examination and a driving test. Inside three years the license renews without examination — but the manual warns you still cannot legally drive on it while it is expired, past the 60-day grace period.
How long do you have to report a move to ALEA?
Thirty days, per the manual, citing Alabama Code 760-X-1-.07(7). Updating the address on your state driver record is free, but no new card is issued on that basis — for that you appear in person at a Driver License Examining Office, a probate judge's office or a license commissioner's office. New residents of Alabama get a separate 30-day clock under § 32-6-1(a) to obtain an Alabama license at all.
How many points suspend an Alabama license, and for how long?
Twelve in a two-year period is the first rung: 12 to 14 points means 60 days, 15 to 17 means 90, 18 to 20 means 120, 21 to 23 means 180, and 24 or more means 365. Reckless driving is 6 points, passing a stopped school bus 5, illegal passing 4, following too closely 3. After two years a conviction stops counting toward suspension but stays on the record.
What does it cost to get an Alabama license reinstated?
ALEA's reinstatement page lists $100 for a suspended or cancelled license, $175 for a revoked one, and $275 for an alcohol- or drug-related suspension or revocation, plus $25 more where the offense was drug-related and $150 for interlock issuance. Failing to surrender the license within 30 days adds $50; a child-support suspension adds $50. Confirm the current figures on that page before you pay — no personal checks.
Which Alabama card gets you through airport security?
The STAR ID, Alabama's REAL ID. Enforcement was extended to May 7, 2025, and from that date every air traveler 18 and over needs a compliant license or ID, or another identification on the TSA's accepted list, for domestic flights. The quick check is on the card itself: any Alabama credential issued on or after April 25, 2022 that is not compliant prints "Not for Federal Identification" across the top.
What does Alabama inspect on your car before the road test?
Safe operating condition plus three specific items the manual names — brake lights, left and right turn signals, and the horn. You also present proof of insurance and the vehicle registration. A rental works only if your name is on the rental agreement as an additional driver, and a 16-year-old applicant must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
