Getting licensed in Illinois — the practical details

The questions people actually ask about the Illinois process, answered from official state sources.

What does an Illinois driver's license cost?

It depends on your age. The Secretary of State's fee table lists the basic license at $30, then $5 at ages 18 through 20, $30 at 21 through 68, $5 at 69 through 80, $2 at 81 through 86, and free at 87 and older. An original Class D instruction permit is $20; a renewal permit is $10. Fees are set by law and change, so confirm yours on that fee page.

What do you actually walk out of an Illinois DMV holding?

A secure temporary paper driver's license valid for 90 days, with your photo and the basic information from the permanent card. Since July 2016 that applies to new, renewal, duplicate and corrected cards alike. The permanent card is printed centrally after fraud checks and mailed to the address on file, usually within 15 business days.

At what age can an Illinois teen get an instruction permit?

Fifteen, if enrolled in an approved driver education course or within 30 days of starting one. At 17 years and 3 months you may apply without the course. Section 6-103 of the Vehicle Code also allows a permit at 15 years and 3 months for a child who is enrolled in school, meets the Driver Education Act's educational requirements, and has passed the examinations the Secretary may prescribe.

How long does an Illinois driver's license stay valid?

Four years is the ordinary term under Section 6-115 of the Vehicle Code. A license issued under 21 expires three months after the 21st birthday. The statute sets a two-year term at ages 81 through 86 and a 12-month term at 87 and older, and the 2026 Rules of the Road prints the same bands; one bullet on the Secretary's renewal-timelines page still summarizes ages 21 through 86 as a flat four years, so read your renewal notice for the term you were actually given.

What vision standard does Illinois apply?

20/40 acuity with or without corrective lenses, plus at least 140 degrees of peripheral vision for an unrestricted license. Acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 limits you to daylight driving only. You either take the screening at a DMV or file a Vision Specialist Report from a licensed optometrist, ophthalmologist or physician, dated within six months of your facility visit.

What maneuvers does the Illinois road test score?

Checking the controls, parking brake and mirrors before moving; backing about 50 feet straight and smoothly while watching the rear; a turnabout using an alley on the left side of the street; parking and starting both uphill and downhill; and general control — signs, control devices, right of way, lane markings and turn signals. Any traffic violation or dangerous action during the exam is an automatic fail.

How long can a new Illinois resident drive on an out-of-state license?

Ninety days after a permanent move, or until that license expires, whichever comes first. Applying for the Illinois card means surrendering every valid out-of-state license, state ID card, instruction permit and commercial license you hold. Illinois does not recognize the international driver's license.

What happens if you are caught cheating on the Illinois written exam?

You fail and cannot retake the exam for 30 days. Examiners warn applicants first for behavior that could be considered suspicious; the handbook's non-exhaustive examples are an open book within your field of vision, looking around, and checking a cellphone or other wireless device. Taking any part of a driver's license exam for another person is a criminal offense carrying a fine and a mandatory minimum of seven days in jail.

Can the Illinois written exam be taken in Spanish?

Yes. Section 6-109 of the Vehicle Code says all portions of the written and verbal examinations may be given in Spanish, and at the Secretary's discretion in any other language as well as in English, at the examinee's request — except for English wording that appears on facsimiles of road signs. The same section lets the Secretary adopt rules on interpreters during application and testing.

Is Illinois adding a longer license term?

Section 6-115 of the Vehicle Code directs the Secretary of State to offer qualified applicants the option of an eight-year driver's license beginning no later than July 1, 2027, with proposed rules due to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules by January 1, 2027. Until those rules are in place, the ordinary four-year term and the age bands above still govern.
