Getting licensed in Wisconsin — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Wisconsin process, answered from official state sources.
How many written exams does Wisconsin make a car applicant pass?
Two, scored independently. Section 1 of the 2026 Motorists' Handbook gives the knowledge test 50 questions with 40 correct to pass, and gives the Highway Signs Test its own 15 questions with 12 correct. Both bars are 80%, but they are measured on separate sets and neither result rescues the other.
What does the written testing cost in Wisconsin?
Nothing at a service center. The DMV fee page lists knowledge and signs tests at $0, and the handbook says tests taken in a DMV customer service center are free. The at-home version for 15-to-17-year-olds is $10 per attempt, collected by the testing vendor rather than WisDOT. Confirm both on the fee page and the knowledge tests page before you plan around them.
What are the age floors in Wisconsin?
Fifteen for a Class D instruction permit — the DMV's graduated licensing FAQ says you are eligible when you are 15 years old or older — and 16 for the probationary license that follows it. Between the two sits a holding period that depends on your age: six months on the permit if you are under 18, seven days if you are 18 or older.
How many wrong answers can a Wisconsin applicant afford?
Ten on the traffic-law test and three on the signs test. The handbook's bars are 40 right out of 50 and 12 right out of 15, so an eleventh miss on the long test or a fourth on the short one ends that attempt. Neither test carries partial credit or a per-topic minimum in the handbook's description.
Does Wisconsin schedule the written test, or do you walk in?
You walk in. The DMV's knowledge tests page says these tests are conducted on a walk-in basis and that the DMV does not schedule appointments for them; every customer service center offers the test except the Milwaukee Downtown and Sauk City locations. The road test runs the opposite way — it is booked through an online system, and most centers open slots 8 to 11 weeks out.
Who is allowed to take a Wisconsin knowledge test from home?
Applicants between the ages of 15 and 17 who are enrolled in a behind-the-wheel driver education course, according to WisDOT's BDS348 Q&A sheet. It runs through KnowTo Drive on a webcam-equipped laptop or desktop with a parent or guardian supervising, costs $10 an attempt, and is offered in English and Spanish. Only two of an applicant's five yearly attempts may be taken this way.
In which languages can you take the Wisconsin Class D tests?
Eleven, on computer and in writing: English, American Sign Language, Burmese, Chinese, Croatian, Hmong, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Somali and Spanish. Audio assist is available on request. The at-home version is narrower — English and Spanish only — and the motorcycle test is offered in those same two.
What vision does Wisconsin require for a car license?
Visual acuity of at least 20/40 in one eye, corrected or uncorrected, plus a 70-degree field of vision from the center of each eye — Section 1 of the handbook states it for regular car and motorcycle applicants. The DMV or your own vision specialist can perform the screening; miss it and you carry form MV3030V/T579 to a specialist.
How soon can you test again after failing in Wisconsin?
The next day at the earliest for a written test, and only five attempts at the same test within a one-year period before DMV staff have to grant special permission. A failed road test is different: the wait is calculated from your results and falls between 1 and 14 days, and the online scheduling system works it out for you.
How long does a Wisconsin road test take?
Twenty to 90 minutes, depending on the license class and endorsement you are applying for, per the DMV's road test page. Before any of it starts the examiner inspects your vehicle for safety defects and valid registration, and problems found there can get the test denied before you drive a foot.
When does a Wisconsin license actually reach you?
Within 10 business days. Wisconsin mails every license and ID card from one production facility, so you leave the counter with a paper receipt valid for 45 days. That photo receipt is acceptable photo identification for voting and stands in for the card until it arrives — but it will not work as proof of identity for a Social Security replacement card.
How long is a Wisconsin probationary license good for?
It expires two years from your next birthday, according to the DMV fee page, which prices it at $28. The regular Class D that follows runs eight years at $42.50. The handbook says renewal time starts 90 days before the probationary card expires, and a reminder notice arrives 45 to 60 days before your birthday in the expiration year. Check current amounts on the fee page.
