Getting licensed in Washington — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Washington process, answered from official state sources.
Which agency licenses drivers in Washington?
The Washington State Department of Licensing, at dol.wa.gov. Its online counter is License Express, where you create the account that issues your Washington Driver License number — a unique 12-digit number that appears on learner permits, ID cards and licenses, and that a driver training school asks for when you enroll.
How much is a first Washington driver license?
The DOL's fee page builds it from a $50 application fee, a $10 per year issuance fee and a $1 technology fee: $111 for 6 years or $131 for 8 years. The enhanced version charges $17 per year instead, for $153 or $187. Confirm current amounts on that page, which warns its list may not cover all situations.
How long does a Washington driver license last?
You choose 6 or 8 years, and the DOL's renewal page says it usually expires on your birthday. Renewal opens 1 year before expiration and stays open until 8 years after it; past 8 years you cannot renew and must start over.
What does a Washington learner permit cost?
$35 for one year, $25 to renew it for another year, $20 to replace one lost or stolen, per the DOL's fee page — confirm current amounts there, since it warns its list may not cover all situations. RCW 46.20.055 sets the same $35 as the application fee on or after January 1, 2026, up from $25 before that date.
What score passes the Washington drive test?
At least 80 out of 100, graded by the instructor riding with you, per the DOL's testing page. Your examiner discusses the results with you afterward, and a passing score is good for one year.
In how many languages is Washington's knowledge test offered?
Twelve, per the DOL's testing page: English, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, Tagalog and Ukrainian. The same page tells you to check with your driver training school that they offer it in the language you need.
How soon must a new Washington resident get a license?
Within 30 days. The Washington Driver Guide gives new residents 18 and older who are licensed in another state 30 days to obtain a Washington driver license, and adds that an expired out-of-state license means passing both the knowledge and skills exams first.
Who may sit beside you while you practice on a Washington permit?
RCW 46.20.055(3) accepts either a driver training education course instructor qualified under chapter 46.82 or 28A.220 RCW, or a licensed driver with at least five years of driving experience. The DOL's permit and adult application pages name only the second of those.
Does the Washington DOL have to offer an exam appointment near me?
Only regionally. Where the DOL stops routine testing in a region because driver training schools or school districts provide adequate sites, RCW 46.20.120 still requires it to give exams by appointment to applicants 18 and older in at least one licensing office in that region.
What does the Washington knowledge and drive test cost?
The DOL's fee page lists both as varying by location and tells you to check with your testing location for the exact amount — a consequence of driver training schools and school districts administering the exams. Driver training students also pay their school's own fees on top.
Checked against official Washington sources on August 19, 2026.
