What's on the Indiana written tests
Every test below follows the format published by the Indiana BMV; we publish 572 practice questions across the 4 Indiana tests here.
- Car / Permit — the Indiana BMV's test has ~50 questions and you need ~40 correct (80%).Indiana scores its two sections separately — traffic maneuvers and traffic signs — and each needs 80% correct on its own, so a strong section can't carry a weak one. This simulation combines both.
- Motorcycle — the Indiana BMV's test has ~50 questions and you need ~40 correct (~80%).
- CDL — General Knowledge — the Indiana BMV's test has ~50 questions and you need ~40 correct (80%).
- CDL — Air Brakes — the Indiana BMV's test has ~25 questions and you need ~20 correct (80%).
These formats come from the Indiana exam rules the Indiana BMV publishes — always confirm current details before you book a test.
Getting licensed in Indiana — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Indiana process, answered from official state sources.
What does an Indiana permit and license cost at the counter?
The BMV fee chart revised January 1, 2026 prices a learner's permit, driver's or motorcycle, at $9.00, and prices the license by age: $17.50 under 75, $11.00 at least 75 but less than 85, $7.00 at 85 and over. Amending or replacing a credential is $9.00 and a late license renewal adds a $6.00 administrative penalty. Confirm the current numbers on that chart before you go.
How young can you be and still leave a branch with a learner's permit?
Fifteen, but only with a school behind you. The BMV's learner's-permit page grants a permit at 15 to someone enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel training course who can show a valid Certificate of Driver Education from the provider. Without that enrollment the age is 16. Both routes require identity documents, a vision screening and a knowledge exam, and the manual adds that an applicant under 18 must supply an emergency contact who is at least 18.
How long does Indiana make you hold the permit before the license?
180 days, which the BMV glosses as approximately six months, and the age gate on top of it turns on driver education: at least 16 with successful completion of an approved program, or at least 16 years and 270 days without one. Only time on a valid permit counts, and a permit expired more than 180 days has to be earned back with another knowledge exam.
What score passes Indiana's two-part knowledge exam?
Eighty percent or higher correct on each component, not eighty percent overall. The BMV's knowledge-exam page describes two sections, one on traffic maneuvers and one on types of traffic signs, and the Driver's Manual repeats the rule in Chapter 9. Neither that page nor the manual we read publishes a total question count for this exam, so the roughly 50 shown on this site is our own model and not a BMV figure — and because each section is scored on its own, a strong section cannot carry a weak one.
Do you need an appointment for the knowledge exam in Indiana?
Not for an ordinary attempt, but you must arrive at the branch at least 30 minutes before it closes to sit the computer-based exam that day. Appointments are for the exceptions: needing the exam read to you, being deaf or hard of hearing — which the driver's-license page routes through a branch manager or the BMV Contact Center at 1-888-692-6841 — and needing an ASL translator, which the knowledge-exam page routes through any branch or the Contact Center at 888-692-6841. An exam with an ASL translator cannot be taken on the same day it is scheduled, and one interpreter is allowed per customer.
How many hours of supervised practice does Indiana want logged?
At least 50, with at least 10 of them at night, recorded on State Form 54706 and handed over when you apply. A daylight-only G restriction on your permit excuses the 10 night hours but not the 50 total. The manual allows multiple logs to reach the number, and requires a parent or legal guardian to sign if the applicant is under 18.
How soon can you test again after failing in Indiana?
Fail the knowledge exam and you wait until the next business day. Fail the driving skills exam and you wait 7 days; fail a third skills exam while holding a learner's permit and you wait two months from the date of that last failed exam. A passed knowledge result keeps for 180 days, and the BMV warns that you will have to renew the learner's permit if it expires before you are eligible for another skills exam.
Which restriction letters can Indiana's vision screening add to a license?
The three the vision-screening page names as the most common: B for glasses or contact lenses, F for outside mirrors or a rearview camera, and G for daylight driving only. Reading without glasses, 20/20 to 20/40 in both eyes carries none of them. The chart's weakest corrected bands — 20/50 with the other eye 20/70 to blind, and 20/70 in both — carry B, F and G together. A licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist can complete State Form 56520 so the BMV may waive the branch screening.
When is a probationary Indiana driver barred from the road?
For the first 180 days after the license is issued, you may not drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. After those 180 days and until you turn 18, you may not drive Sunday through Thursday after 11 p.m., Monday through Friday before 5 a.m., or Saturday and Sunday between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. You may still drive in those hours going to or from work, a school-sanctioned activity or a religious event, or with someone in the front seat who has valid driving privileges and is at least 25, or a spouse with valid privileges who is at least 21.
Can you sit Indiana's knowledge exam in a language other than English?
The BMV's list of languages the knowledge exam is offered in runs to nineteen, and Spanish is on it, alongside Arabic, Burmese, Chin, Croatian, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Swahili, Tagalog and Vietnamese. American Sign Language is handled below that list as a scheduled arrangement rather than a test language, with appointments through any branch or the Contact Center at 888-692-6841.
Where does Indiana's driving skills exam happen, and what do you bring?
Either at a BMV branch or at a BMV-licensed driver training school that participates in the skills test program. You bring your own vehicle — legally equipped, insured, clean, safe, and with its current registration — and the manual says the BMV charges nothing for the exam it administers. Branch appointments book no more than three weeks and no less than 48 business hours ahead, and you arrive at least 15 minutes early. Interior cameras must be off, backup cameras excepted, and nobody rides along but the examiner.
How long is an Indiana driver's license good for?
Six years if you are younger than 75, three years from 75 through 84, and two years at 85 or older, with credentials expiring at midnight on your birthday. A probationary license is the exception: it expires 30 days after your 21st birthday and cannot be renewed before that birthday, and renewing it afterward is what produces an unrestricted license.
