Getting licensed in Colorado — the practical details

The questions people actually ask about the Colorado process, answered from official state sources.

How much is a Colorado driver's license?

Statute sets twenty-eight dollars for a driver's or minor driver's license and fourteen dollars for the instruction permit application, and lets the department move either figure by no more than five percent a year — so check the DMV's current fee page before you budget. A motorcycle endorsement adds a two-dollar surcharge.

What is the minimum age for a Colorado driver's license?

Sixteen, and Colorado will not issue one before sixteen years and six months unless the applicant has done six hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved instructor — or twelve substitute hours with a parent when no school offers that training within thirty miles. Permit routes open earlier: at fifteen with a driver education course, or at fifteen and a half with a four-hour driver awareness program.

How long is the Colorado knowledge test?

Neither the driver handbook nor the statute requiring the exam gives a question count. Our Colorado practice sets are built to 25 questions, which is our working length rather than a published one.

What score passes in Colorado?

Absent from the handbook and the statute, same as the length. We score our Colorado sets at 20 correct out of 25, which means five misses, but that ceiling is ours rather than the state's.

Is the Colorado written test timed?

No time limit appears in the handbook or the statute. The one scheduling constraint Colorado does publish is a closing-time rule: written tests are not given within 30 minutes of an office's scheduled closing time.

What can you do at the Colorado DMV online?

myDMV covers beginning an application for a new license or ID, renewing if eligible, scheduling an appointment, upgrading a permit to a driver license, extending an expiration date, changing your address, checking mail-renewal eligibility, requesting a driver record and paying citations.

Where do you book a Colorado driving test?

With a certified commercial driving school, or with a county-operated office that offers them. State driver license offices do not schedule drive tests at all, so check your county's site and the DMV's list of certified schools.

Does Colorado check your eyesight?

Yes, at first application and at every renewal. Renewing online swaps the test for an attestation under penalty of perjury that an optometrist or ophthalmologist examined your eyes within the previous three years.

What happens if you fail the Colorado drive test?

You wait until the next business day to retake it. Retaking either the knowledge exam or the driving demonstration carries a surcharge the department sets by rule to cover the failed attempt, and statute caps that surcharge at fifteen dollars.

How long is a Colorado license valid?

An adult license expires on your birthday in the fifth year after issuance. A minor driver's license expires twenty days after your twenty-first birthday, and a document issued under the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act expires after three years.

What if nobody in the household has a Colorado license?

The adult who signed the affidavit of liability may appoint an alternate permit supervisor who does hold a Colorado license and is twenty-one or older. A signer serving in the military may instead supervise on a valid out-of-state license plus proper military identification.

Which agency issues Colorado driver's licenses?

The Division of Motor Vehicles, which sits inside the Colorado Department of Revenue rather than a public-safety department. County clerk and recorder offices issue licenses too, keeping thirteen dollars of the fee in larger counties and eighteen in smaller ones.
