Getting licensed in Kentucky — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Kentucky process, answered from official state sources.
What score passes the Kentucky written test?
80 percent, and it is Kentucky's own published figure. The Kentucky Driver Manual, printed page 11: "Applicants must make a minimum score of 80% to pass this test." The Cabinet's graduated-licensing page repeats the sentence in its FAQ. Nothing we fetched attaches a question count to it, so the roughly 40-question run this site offers is our model and the percentage is the state's.
Which Kentucky agency actually gives the tests?
The Kentucky State Police. The Transportation Cabinet's Driver Licensing Regional Offices handle the application, documents, payment and the card; the manual states that once the Cabinet has prepared the application, the State Police administer all required tests. Vision, written and road tests are all booked through the State Police scheduler, not through the Cabinet.
How old do you have to be for a Kentucky permit?
Fifteen. The manual's permit-phase step, printed page 5: "Drivers must be at least 15 years of age to take the vision and written knowledge tests and apply for a permit." The Cabinet's graduated-licensing FAQ says the same. Kentucky adds a second condition to eligibility that is easy to miss: your driving privilege must not have been withdrawn in this state or any other.
How long do you have to hold a Kentucky permit before the road test?
180 days if you are under 21, and 30 days from 21 on. The manual and the Cabinet's step pages agree: under-18 and 18-to-20 applicants both wait 180 days, and only at 21 does the hold drop to 30. The permit itself is valid three years for the adult tracks and can be renewed with no stated limit on the number of renewals.
What does Kentucky charge for a permit and a license?
A learner's permit is $15.00, or $18.00 as a REAL ID, and that pair appears on all three age-track pages. Only the graduated-licensing page prices the card itself: $21.50 for a 4-year license, $24.00 as a REAL ID. The renewal page adds the 8-year versions at $43.00 and $48.00. Confirm on the page carrying your figure before you go.
What eyesight does Kentucky require of a first-time applicant?
20/40, corrected or uncorrected, before you are allowed to move on to the written test. Reach it through glasses or contacts and a corrective-lens restriction goes on the credential. Miss it and you are referred to a vision specialist; after that referral, an acuity of 20/60 or better still leaves you eligible to test for a permit or license.
Can you retake the Kentucky written test the same week you fail it?
The next available day, according to all three of the Cabinet's step pages — the written-test wait is a scheduling problem, not a penalty, and none of the pages read for this guide prints a fee for a retake. So book the earliest open slot rather than budgeting for per-attempt charges, and book it with the Kentucky State Police: all three step pages route test appointments to them rather than to the Regional Office counter, and the two adult pages put the vision test on that list too.
Do you have to test in the county where you live?
Not since July 5, 2022. The State Police driver-testing page says Kentuckians seeking a permit or license may make testing appointments at any regional office throughout the Commonwealth, regardless of county of residence. If your nearest site is booked out, a site farther away is a legitimate choice.
Does every Kentucky renewal now include an eye test?
Since January 1, 2025, yes — for driver's license and learner's permit renewals, under KRS 186.577. It is free at any Regional Office with no appointment, or a vision specialist can complete a TC 94-202 form within 12 months of the renewal. Three groups are exempt: military residents stationed outside Kentucky with their spouses and dependents, active commercial license holders, and drivers with a bioptic restriction.
How long can a Kentucky license sit expired before you start over?
Five years for a license, one year for a learner's permit. Under five years expired and the renewal page says no retesting is required; over five and you reapply as a new driver starting with a permit. A permit expired more than a year sends you back to the written and vision tests. Renewing up to six months early is the cheap way to avoid both.
What is the Letter ID myDrive keeps asking for?
A 9-character alphanumeric code printed on select Transportation Cabinet documents dated on or after June 6, 2026 and issued within the last 60 days. It is what links a myDrive account to your credential, and without it online driver services stay closed. You can request one by mail while creating the account — delivery typically takes 5 to 10 business days — or pick one up at a Driver Licensing Regional Office.
Can a Kentucky popup licensing event give you the written test?
No. The Popup Driver Licensing Program page states that it does not offer written or road testing services, and sends anything requiring initial testing to the Kentucky State Police. What a popup does do is REAL ID upgrades, free renewal vision screenings, 8-year licenses for drivers due to renew, name and address updates, and commercial license renewals — for residents of the host county, by online appointment, with no cash accepted.
