1. On Maine's school bus skills test, which maneuver replaces the alley dock used in the Class B test?
Correct answer: The bus turnaround
The school bus off-road test repeats the Class B maneuvers with one change: the applicant demonstrates a bus turnaround in place of the alley dock.

2. On the road test's stop/start maneuver, which of these is NOT one of the steps once you have stopped?
Correct answer: Shutting off the engine and removing the key
Once stopped you cancel the signal, switch on the four-way flashers, set the parking brake, shift to neutral or park and take your feet off the pedals. The engine keeps running.

3. During the hydraulic brake check you pump the pedal three times and then hold firm pressure. The pedal slowly sinks. What does that suggest?
Correct answer: The system may be leaking or have another fault, and it needs repair before you drive
The pedal should stay put for the five-second hold. If it moves, the system may be leaking, and the manual says to have it repaired before the vehicle is driven.

4. You are stopped on an upgrade and use the parking brake to keep from rolling back. When should you release it?
Correct answer: Only once you have applied enough engine power to hold the vehicle
The parking brake stays on until the engine is pulling hard enough that the vehicle will not roll backward when the brake comes off.

5. From what position do you begin the reverse offset backing exercise?
Correct answer: From where the previous exercise ended, parallel with the outer boundary
Reverse offset backing starts from the stopped position that ended forward offset tracking, with the vehicle parallel to the outer boundary.

6. In the seven-step inspection, you repeat the parking brake pull test for the trailer of a combination. How are the brakes set for that check?
Correct answer: Trailer parking brake set, power unit parking brake released
First the power unit's parking brake is tested with the trailer's released. The steps are then repeated the other way around so the trailer brake alone has to hold.

7. What ability does the forward stop exercise demonstrate?
Correct answer: Judging where the front of your vehicle is during a controlled stop
You pull forward through the alley and make a single stop with the vehicle's front-most point inside the box at the far end, which shows you can judge where the front is.

8. Why does the inspection test include a parking brake check?
Correct answer: To show the brake keeps the vehicle from rolling when parked, especially on a grade
A parked vehicle that rolls can injure people or damage property, so you show the parking brake holds by pulling gently against it.

9. Before you may go on to the road test, which part of the CDL skills test must already be passed?
Correct answer: The Basic Control Skills test
The segments run in order. The vehicle inspection comes before basic control skills, and basic control skills must be passed before the road test begins.

10. In the forward offset tracking exercise, which way do you steer through the opening?
Correct answer: To the left, into the opposite lane
You move forward and turn left through the gap to reach the opposite lane, while the rear tire farthest to the right stays between the cone and the line.

11. Partway through the forward offset tracking exercise, you bring the vehicle to a stop. What happens?
Correct answer: The exercise is ended
This exercise must be driven without stopping, backing or getting out. A stop along the way ends it.

12. What does the Basic Control Skills test check?
Correct answer: Your basic skill in controlling the vehicle and judging its position relative to other objects
The exercises show whether you can handle a commercial vehicle and judge where it sits in relation to boundaries and objects, skills you need in many real driving situations.
