  1. 1. During the basic control skills test the examiner raises a hand. What does that signal tell you to do?

  2. 2. In the reverse offset backing exercise you back too far and cross the alley's rear boundary. What will you be required to do?

Correct answer: Drive straight ahead out past the alley entrance until the examiner signals a stop, then resume

The manual says a driver who backs past the rear boundary must pull straight ahead beyond the alley entrance until signaled to stop, before continuing the exercise.

  4. 4. How many free 'looks' may you be allowed on the two backing exercises of the basic control skills test?

  5. 5. In the forward stop exercise, how many times may you stop as you bring the front of the vehicle into the stop box?

    Correct answer: Only once

The forward stop shows you can judge the front of the vehicle in a controlled stop. You drive forward through the alley and may stop a single time, without going past the box.

  6. 6. You stop on an undivided two-lane road that carries traffic in both directions. Besides a device placed within 10 feet of a front or rear corner of the vehicle, where do the warning devices go?

Correct answer: 100 feet behind and 100 feet ahead of the vehicle

On a two-lane or undivided road the devices mark the vehicle within 10 feet of its corners and sit 100 feet to the rear and 100 feet to the front, on the shoulder or in the lane where you stopped.

  7. 7. You are allowed to get out of a truck to check its position during a backing exercise. After setting the parking brake and shifting to neutral, how must you exit?

Drivers must leave and enter the vehicle safely by facing it and holding three points of contact. Failing to secure the vehicle or to exit safely may bring an automatic failure for an unsafe act.

  8. 8. When you carry reflective triangles out to place them, how does the manual say to hold them?

  9. 9. Because backing is always dangerous, how does the manual suggest you park?

Correct answer: In a way that lets you drive out forward when you leave

The manual says to avoid backing whenever you can and, when parking, to try to position the vehicle so you can drive forward on leaving.

  10. 10. During a backing exercise you stop, then continue backing without pulling forward. Is that scored as a pull-up?

A pull-up means driving forward in the middle of a backing exercise, either to clear an encroachment or to improve your position. The manual says a stop with no change of direction is not a pull-up.
