Texas Car / Permit practice question · Right-of-Way
An emergency vehicle with flashing lights and a siren is coming up behind you. You should:
Answer choices
- speed up to stay ahead of it
- pull over to the right edge of the road and stop until it passes— Correct answer
- stop right where you are in the lane
- keep driving at the same speed
Why this is the answer
Texas requires you to give way to police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and similar emergency vehicles sounding a siren, bell or flashing red light. When traffic allows, move to the right edge of the road and stop. Stopping in your lane blocks the way. If you cannot pull over, slow down and leave a path that stays open for the emergency vehicle.
