1. When another motorist behaves aggressively toward you, the manual says the safest response is to do what?
Correct answer: Yield and let them get past you
Set your pride aside and make every effort to move out of their way rather than speeding up or holding your lane. Avoid eye contact and do not react to their gestures.

2. Why do large vehicles usually need a larger gap than a car to cross or enter traffic?
Correct answer: Their slow acceleration and greater size demand more room
Because commercial vehicles accelerate slowly and take up more room, you need a much bigger gap than a car would. A heavier load means an even larger gap is needed.

3. You reach an intersection and see that the driver of a crossing vehicle is looking somewhere other than at you. What should you expect?
Correct answer: They may never see you and may take the crossing as theirs
Someone whose attention is elsewhere has not registered your vehicle at all, and even a driver who seems to glance your way may assume the crossing is theirs to take. Cover the brake and be ready to let them go.

4. On a road with two left-turn lanes, which lane should a large vehicle use to turn left?
Correct answer: The right of the two turn lanes
Take the right of the two turning lanes. Starting in the inside lane can force you to swing right to complete the turn, and drivers to your left are easier to see.

5. When a truck has to swing wide to complete a right turn, why should the back of the vehicle stay near the curb?
Correct answer: It shuts the gap another driver would use to slip past on your right
Holding the rear tight to the curb closes the opening a following motorist would otherwise slip into on your right side. Drifting left before the turn is just as risky, since a driver behind you may read it as a lane change.

6. At a crossing with gates and flashing lights, when may you proceed?
Correct answer: Once the gates go up, the lights stop, and it is safe
Stop when the lights flash and before the gate lowers, and remain stopped until the gates rise and the lights stop flashing. Then proceed only when it is safe.

7. At a passive railroad crossing with no signals or gates, who is responsible for deciding when it is safe to cross?
Correct answer: The driver alone
A passive crossing has no traffic control device, so the choice to stop or go rests with you. You must recognize the crossing, look for a train, and judge whether there is room to get across.

8. Before pulling out to cross a road in a heavily loaded rig, what must you satisfy yourself about?
Correct answer: That the whole vehicle will clear the road before traffic reaches it
Judge the gap by whether the entire vehicle can finish the crossing before approaching traffic gets to you, not merely by whether you can start moving. A heavy load builds speed slowly, so the room needed grows with the weight.

9. At a crossing with more than one track, what danger should you watch for?
Correct answer: One train can hide another on a second track
A train on one track can hide a second train on another track, so look both ways and make sure all tracks are clear before you cross, even after one train has passed.

10. At a grade crossing with no stop line painted on the pavement, a driver required to stop must halt within what distance of the closest rail?
Correct answer: Somewhere between 15 and 50 feet from that rail
With no painted line to work from, the stop has to land in a band that starts 15 feet back from the nearest rail and ends at 50 feet. Inside that window the vehicle stays out of the train's path while you keep a usable view along the track.

11. How far into an intersection should a long vehicle travel before the left turn is started?
Correct answer: All the way to the middle of it
Wait until your vehicle has arrived at the middle of the intersection, then bring the wheel around. Cutting the corner early lets off-tracking drag your left side into a vehicle waiting beside you.

12. As you drive through an intersection, which road users must you let go ahead of you?
Correct answer: Pedestrians and traffic already in the intersection
Slow down and give way to any pedestrians and to traffic that is already within the intersection, and avoid switching lanes while you are crossing it.
