Getting licensed in Georgia — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Georgia process, answered from official state sources.
How much does a Georgia driver's license cost?
$32 for a Class C license, valid eight years. A Class CP learner's permit is $10 for two years and a Class D provisional license is $10 for five. Renewing through Online Services or the DDS 2 GO app takes $5 off.
How many questions are on the Georgia permit test?
Forty in total, split into a 20-item Road Rules test and a 20-item Road Signs test. You need 15 right on each one, and the two scores are never combined.
What is the minimum age for a Georgia learner's permit?
Fifteen. A Class D provisional license follows at 16, and a full unrestricted Class C license at 18.
How long do you have to hold a Georgia learner's permit?
One year and one day before applying for a Class D license. Time held on an out-of-state permit counts once it has been transferred to Georgia, but the combined total still has to reach a year and a day.
Where do you take the Georgia knowledge exam?
At any DDS Customer Service Center, on the center's own computer. You must be seated at it no later than 30 minutes before the center closes for a non-commercial test, or 45 minutes before closing for a commercial one.
Is there an eye test at the Georgia DDS counter?
Yes — a mechanical device checks for 20/60 vision in one eye and a 140-degree field. A failed field test is referred out on form DS-MR-274 for an optometrist or ophthalmologist to complete.
How long is a Georgia driver's license valid?
Eight years for a Class C license or a Georgia ID card, five years for a Class D provisional license, two years for a Class CP permit, and six months for a motorcycle permit.
How many languages is the Georgia written test offered in?
Twenty-six for the Road Rules section, including Amharic, Burmese, Dari, Haitian Creole, Pashto, Rohingya, Swahili, Wolof and Yoruba. Whether Road Signs is offered in those languages too is unsettled: the DDS List of Languages page says it is, while the testing-information section of the driver's manual says the sign questions are given in English only — so confirm with a Customer Service Center before you test. The road skills test, by contrast, is given in English only.
What happens if you fail the Georgia written test?
You wait one day, then seven days after a second failure, book an appointment for the retest, and pay the $10 permit fee again — it is charged per attempt and never refunded.
Do you need an appointment for a Georgia road test?
Yes. Walk-ins are not accepted for automobile, motorcycle or commercial road tests, and same-day slots are not offered at all. The knowledge exam is the opposite: no appointment is needed for a first attempt.
Does a Georgia license carry the REAL ID star?
Every license and ID the state has issued after 2012 carries a gold or black Secure ID star. Only one physical card may bear it, so if your license is compliant your Georgia ID card is not.
Do adults need supervised driving hours in Georgia?
Yes. An applicant of 18 or over signs an affidavit of 40 hours of supervised road driving, six of them at night, and must already hold a Georgia permit and have passed the knowledge exam before taking the road test.
