  1. 1. You are riding on an unpaved side road and reach an open intersection with a paved road that has no signs or signals. Who goes first?

Correct answer: Traffic on the paved road — you must yield

At an intersection with no control devices you give way when you are coming off an unpaved road onto a paved one, joining a state highway from a lesser road, or when another vehicle is already in the intersection.

  2. 2. What is the most common way that cars and motorcycles collide at intersections?

Correct answer: A car turns left across the motorcycle's path

The most frequent car-motorcycle crash happens when an oncoming car turns left across the path of a rider the driver did not see. Slow down, cover your brakes, and stay ready as you approach intersections.

  3. 3. Someone is walking across the street inside a marked crosswalk ahead of your motorcycle. What must you do?

Correct answer: Stop and stay stopped until they have finished crossing

Riders owe the right of way to people on foot in any crosswalk or intersection. You also may not overtake a vehicle that has already stopped to let someone cross.

  4. 4. The acceleration lane is running out as you blend onto an expressway. Who must yield?

Correct answer: You must — traffic already on the highway has the right of way

Build speed on the ramp and in the acceleration lane, then blend in when a gap appears. Riders joining the highway give way to traffic already there, and stopping in the acceleration lane is a last resort.

  5. 5. An emergency vehicle comes up behind you with its lights and siren on. What must you do on your motorcycle?

Correct answer: Pull over to the nearest edge of the road and stop until it passes

Yield the right-of-way: signal, move to the nearest edge of the road, and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. Do not try to outrun it or weave through traffic to get out of the way.

  6. 6. You are rolling your motorcycle out of a parking lot driveway onto the street. Who has the right of way?

Correct answer: Traffic already on the street, plus anyone on the sidewalk

A rider leaving a driveway, alley or roadside waits for vehicles on the main road, and also for anyone walking or cycling across the sidewalk and bike lane.

  7. 7. At a two-way stop you are turning while another vehicle is heading straight through. What is the rule?

Correct answer: The turning vehicle waits for the one going straight

Where only two of the approaches carry stop signs, whoever is turning gives way to the through traffic.

  8. 8. At a four-way stop where two vehicles arrive at the same time, a motorcyclist should:

Correct answer: Yield to the vehicle on the right

Motorcycles follow the same right-of-way rules as other vehicles. When two arrive together, the vehicle on the left yields to the one on the right. Never simply assume other drivers will give you the right-of-way.

  9. 9. A motorcyclist approaching a roundabout must do what?

Correct answer: Give way to vehicles already going around

Traffic inside the circle has the right of way, and everything moves counter-clockwise. If there is a gap you may enter without stopping; never stop or switch lanes inside the circle, and signal on your way out.
