1. Traffic alongside you makes changing lanes impossible as you come up on a work zone. The correct response is to:
Correct answer: Stay in your lane, reduce speed, and go by with extra care
When moving over would be unsafe, the rule does not disappear. Stay where you are, bring your speed down, and go by carefully at a pace that suits the traffic around you.
2. A patrol car sits on the shoulder ahead with its lights flashing. If traffic and safety allow, you should:
Correct answer: Slow down and change lanes so you are not in the lane next to it
Move-over rules ask you to slow and shift out of the lane running alongside the stopped emergency vehicle, so the officer working at the roadside is not passed at close range.
3. The crossbuck sign standing at a grade crossing tells a driver that:
Correct answer: Trains have the right-of-way over highway traffic there
A crossbuck marks the crossing itself and carries a legal duty with it: highway traffic gives way to the train. Where no white stop line is painted, a vehicle that must stop has to halt no closer to the nearest rail than 15 feet, and no more than 50 feet away from it.
4. While your commercial vehicle is passing through an intersection, you are expected to:
Correct answer: Slow down and give way to pedestrians and traffic already in it
Inside the intersection you keep scanning every direction, ease off the throttle, and give way to people on foot and to vehicles already in it. Changing lanes partway through is not permitted.
5. A bus reaches a drawbridge that has no signal light and nobody directing traffic. The driver must:
Correct answer: Stop no less than 50 feet from the draw and check that it is fully closed
With no light and no attendant, the bus stops at least 50 feet ahead of the draw. Only after looking and confirming the draw is all the way shut may the driver cross.

6. The red lights at a highway-rail crossing begin flashing as you approach. You are required to:
Correct answer: Stop and let the train take the crossing
Flashing red lights mean a train is on its way, and you owe it the right-of-way. Bring the vehicle to a stop, and where several tracks meet the road, be certain every one of them is clear before you move.
7. When turning left at an intersection with oncoming traffic, a commercial driver must:
Correct answer: Yield to oncoming traffic and allow extra time to finish the turn
You must yield to oncoming traffic when turning left, and allow for the extra time and space your large vehicle needs to complete the turn safely.
8. You are stopped at a railroad crossing where the gate has come down. You may move forward only after:
Correct answer: The gates have lifted and the red lights have stopped flashing
Wait out the whole sequence. The gates have to rise and the red lights have to stop flashing before you go, and even then you move only when it is genuinely safe to do so.
9. A bus driver is excused from making a full stop at a railroad crossing when:
Correct answer: An officer or flagman is directing traffic through the crossing
The stop is not required where a police officer or flagman is directing traffic through, where a traffic signal is showing green, at streetcar crossings, or at crossings posted as exempt or abandoned.

10. A pedestrian near your truck is looking at a phone instead of at traffic. Keep in mind that such a person:
Correct answer: May step into your path convinced the right-of-way belongs to them
Someone whose attention is elsewhere is a hazard. Distracted people often step out convinced the way is theirs, and even a pedestrian looking straight at you may act on that same belief.
