  1. 1. An insect or a pebble strikes your faceshield and smears your view. What comes first?

Correct answer: Hold the bars steady, keep looking well down the pavement, and pull off once it is safe

The reflex to grab at your face is what causes the crash. Ride the motorcycle first and deal with the damage once you have stopped.

  2. 2. If your front tire suddenly goes flat while you are riding, what should you do?

Correct answer: Hold the handlebars firmly, ease off the throttle, and steer to the roadside

A flat can make the bike hard to control. Grip the handlebars firmly, ease off the throttle gradually (do not brake hard), keep the bike straight, and steer to the side of the road before stopping.

  3. 3. You feel an instant loss of drive at the rear wheel while the engine revs freely. What has probably failed?

Correct answer: The chain or the drive belt

Close the throttle and brake to a halt somewhere safe. A chain or belt that lets go can also jam the rear wheel and start a skid.

  4. 4. A dog runs out and begins chasing your motorcycle. What works best?

Correct answer: Downshift, come toward it slowly, then accelerate away as you reach it

Timing beats raw speed here. Coming toward the animal slowly and then pulling away leaves it behind you without any wild maneuvers, and kicking at it just costs you control.

  5. 5. A vehicle is coming straight at you inside your own lane. What sequence does the handbook give?

Correct answer: Sound the horn and flash the high beam, brake, and steer toward the side of the road

Get the wrong-way driver's attention, scrub off speed, and aim for the edge of the road rather than into oncoming traffic.

  6. 6. The back of your motorcycle begins to jerk and sway from one side to the other. What has most likely happened?

Correct answer: The rear tire has lost its air

A rear tire losing air lets the back end wander. Hold your line, ease off the throttle and get to the side of the road to check it.

  7. 7. What usually lies behind a wobble?

Correct answer: A badly packed load, unsuitable accessories, or incorrect tire pressure

Weight carried in the wrong place, a poorly mounted windshield or fairing, and tire pressure that is off are the usual suspects. Worn steering parts and loose bearings come next.

  8. 8. If the throttle sticks open while you are riding, what is a good first action?

Correct answer: Squeeze the clutch and use the engine cut-off switch if needed

A stuck throttle keeps power going to the rear wheel. Pull in the clutch to disconnect the engine, use the engine cut-off switch if the throttle will not free up, and brake to a safe stop.

  9. 9. A tire has gone flat and you need to slow down. Which brake should you use?

Correct answer: The brake on the wheel that still holds air, applied gradually

Braking the deflated wheel invites a slide. Ease the good wheel down instead, then edge off the road, squeeze the clutch and stop.

  10. 10. Engine power fades and the engine note changes while you are riding. What should you suspect, and do?

Correct answer: The engine may be seizing — squeeze the clutch, pull off the road, and check the oil

An engine starved of oil overheats and can lock up, with the same effect as a jammed rear wheel. Disengaging it early keeps the rear tire turning under you.

  11. 11. The front wheel and handlebars begin shaking rapidly from side to side. What should you do?

Correct answer: Grip the bars firmly, ease the throttle shut, and move your weight forward and down

Fighting the shake or using the brakes can make it worse, and adding power only makes the machine less stable. Bleeding speed off gently settles it, then pull over and find out why.

  12. 12. You come upon a crash and a motorcyclist is lying injured. What does the handbook specifically tell you not to do?

Correct answer: Do not take the injured rider's helmet off

Pulling a helmet off can move an injured neck or spine. Call for help, keep the person calm and still, and leave the helmet for the paramedics.
